YBA=You're Not a Broke Artist (if Damien Hirst Is Your Friend)
Damien Hirst's newly sober musician friend, Antony Genn, and his band, the Hours, are set to play at the Prada store in Soho under a likeness of Hirst's $100 million skull during Fashion Week, and Carl Swanson has an interview with Genn in this week's issue of New York Magazine.
Asked why Hirst funded Genn's re-emergence onto the music scene, Genn said, "The thing is, he's funded so many people to do so many things. Oh God, I've known artists that he's kept food on their tables for the last ten years. He doesn't have that much money because he fucking spends it. He buys art, he gives it away, he buys other people's art, he puts money into projects, he gives loads to charity."
So we stand corrected regarding Portrait of the Artist as a Sellout. Hawking fancy jeans for Levi's may be unbecoming, but it's not as bad if you're doing it for your less fortunate friends.
