Super Sales
Because it's a summer Friday and everyone seems to be sneaking out of the office early, let's talk about the sport of shopping. It doesn't matter whether you love it or hate it - it's a necessity, to a degree, and one of its super-bowls is about to happen.
This weekend is finally Super Saturday, a kind of designer garage sale, if you will, to benefit the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. Shoppers anticipate this annual rite of passage for months.
Here's how it works - you buy a ticket for $450 (or $650 for a two hour preview) and then you are given access to tables and booths full of current fashion apparel and accessories. The brand list is long - Donna Karan, Theory, Carolina Herrera, Calvin Klein, Judith Leiber, Michael Kors, Catherine Malandrino, Diane von Furstenberg, Polo Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Salvatore Ferragamo, Prada, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Emilio Pucci, Hogan, Tory Burch, Thomas Pink, Zac Posen, Scoop NYC, Saks Fifth Avenue, Henri Bendel, Intermix and FAO Schwarz. The best part? These items usually carry less-than-wholesale prices, and the prices go down as the day goes on.
There's even items for collectors. Jennifer Garner has donated to pairs of signed shoes (Prada boots and Dior satin heels) and some clothing (a Missoni cashmere sweater, a pair of Rock and Republic jeans and a Daryl K dress). Cameron Diaz donated signed Costume National and Juicy handbags.
It's a remarkable opportunity to outfit yourself in designer wares for relatively very little which seems to be the trick these days.
