Ich bin ein Berliner?

It is always Fashion Week somewhere. Berlin was the locale this past weekend and it was surprisingly packed with big name fashionistas.

Sex and the City's Kim Catrall was sighted in several front rows, as was starlet Mischa Barton. New York designers Derek Lam and Phillip Lim were sighted in town, the latter being feted at Corner, the city's most uber-cool boutique.

New York based designer Kai Kuhne, formerly of As Four, showed a very modern collection of skinny trouser suits and short shifts in industrial colors. Vivienne Westwood closed out the week with her Anglomania collection, which got a standing ovation.

Clearly, Berlin is not the center of the fashion universe, but it works for some designers. In the case of Kuhne, he's originally from northern Germany, so he get's great exposure and attention for being the hometown boy, instead of being just another struggling designer as he is in New York. Westwood is a huge draw by herself, and doesn't necessarily need the exposure Berlin offers. She is the kind of designer organizers pay to bring to the shows for their added glitz. Organizers were not available to comment on this, but I'd bet this was the deal.

However, the biggest fish in fashion, Karl Lagerfeld, was also in town, receiving an award from Claudia Schiffer at the Elle Fashion Star Awards. Kaiser Karl let it slip that he's looking to show in Berlin in 2009, a source shared.

Perhaps Berlin is rising on the fashion front.
