Luxury on Telelvision: Here to Stay

Luxury Briefing (subscription only) reports that after a pilot run in 2007 CNBC has decided to pick up a full season of Luxury Channel in 2008 with the brave mission of helping rich Europeans spend their money. Barbara Stelzner, Director of News and Programming at CNBC Europe said at the launch: "Our upscale and affluent audience know how to make money and this series will also help them spend it! We're delighted to be working with The Luxury Channel on an exciting and interesting series which we know will have great appeal to CNBC viewers."

The documentary-style programs cover all the usual suspects: off-the-beaten-path holidays, up-and-coming designers, wines and private planes. The channel caters to a monthly audience of 5.4 million of Europe's top 20 percent income earners. Last year they wowed viewers with "Unchartered Africa," "Mega Yachts," and "The Oscars of Luxury."

Sigh.
