Ferré Empire Names a Successor: Nilssen

The Gianfranco Ferré show last night in Milan was one of a house in transition. Part chiffon and on-trend as they say, part '80s homage to the man who died of a brain hemorrhage days before his men's fashion show in June.

Today the house will announce its new designer, Lars Nilssen. To say the hire had heads scratching is putting it mildly. Nilssen is one of the most solid designers working today, but his recent jobs were at Bill Blass and Nina Ricci.

Both of those houses are known for their ladies-who-lunch-femininity. Gianfranco Ferré's heyday was in the 1980s and the house style is very much big, black, and sharp.

What Nilssen will do with that heritage will be the key question on editors' lips from now until the next show time.
