Tumi Time For Europe; Coach Kicking In USA

David Chu, the founder of Nautica, has done a fantastic job with his first women's collection for luggage maker Tumi. The line mixes practicality with chic and, most importantly, reasonable prices. The top end of the range is $695. This puts it firmly into Coach territory. And that's not a bad place to be. Coach keeps going strong. Results today showed 28 percent growth in net sales in fiscal year 2007. But despite their success, brand leaders are fearful of expanding beyond their comfort zone of the US and Japan and China. They think the US can support 500 Coach stores but have said they have no plans to expand in Europe. So I was excited to see that Tumi doesn't have the same fears. It's first women's only store will open in New York this September, and 12 Tumi stores are expected to open in the next year in places like Amsterdam, London, Hamburg and Osaka.
