Haute Couture: Beauty And Brains
I could only make it to two of the haute couture shows this year -- but I think it was a good two. The first, Jean Paul Gaultier, is one of mine and most fashion editor's favorites. Jean Paul uses the couture -- and indeed fashion in general (his ready to wear is made by Aeffe, slated for an IPO soon) -- to both push boundaries both social and sartorial. This year it was a gender game, with the models coming out in the most marvelous versions of men's uniforms. Stunning. And thought provoking.

Elie Saab's runway looked more like a red carpet with the models most wearing shades of gray -- he was inspired by the silver screen (get it?). His customers will. Saab broke rank thanks to his canny LA publicist who got him high visibility at events like the Oscars.

Fashion purists don't rate it, but the stylists of the world will love it.
