Armani: H&M Not Treating Customers As Schmucks Afterall

As I suspected, something was lost in translation in the WWD interview with Giorgio Armani. His Executive Vice President, Worldwide Communications, Robert Triefus, wrote to clarify, copying the Editor of WWD and the journalist who did the interview:

I wanted to respond with Luisa Zargani and Ed Nardoza of WWD in copy regarding your Portfolio.com contribution on Mr. Armani-s comments the other day regarding "guest designers" at H&M.

The word he used was not actually "schmuck" but a colloquial word in italian, which could be translated as "idiots". The context being that in his opinion H&M are very good at what they do and do not need to use celebrity endorsement to give self-assurance to people buying fast-fashion products.
