Smile, You’re F-ing Famous: Lady Gaga Demos Polaroid Camera Shades
Wearing a subdued—for her—all-black outfit, Lady Gaga did her big Polaroid reveal at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, with a line she created that included sunglasses that take and display photographs.
In addition to the GL20 Camera Glasses, the 24-year-old pop star’s Grey Label also boasts the GL10 Instant Mobile Printer and the GL30 Instant Digital Camera. The Fame Monster herself declared the camera glasses to be totally wearable. (Considering that the source wore a dress made of raw meat to the VMAs, prospective buyers may want to try them on for themselves.)
The glasses allow the wearer to take a picture of something they are looking at and then display the image on 1.5-inch LED screens on the lenses. The glasses should be available at retail later this year, though pricing was not yet disclosed.
“Only Lady Gaga could create a hybrid that's part fashion statement, part revolutionary technology, and part tool for self-expression,” Polaroid said in its announcement of the new product line.
During the presentation, Lady Gaga noted that phones are the new cameras, and when she is performing in concert, fans all tend to hold up their cell phones, lighting up the arena. To demonstrate, she held up her own phone and snapped a photo of those at the presentation saying, “Smile you’re so f-ing famous.” That was probably not part of Polaroid’s script, but Gaga did explain that the instant printer aims to address the problem of digital images taken by cell phone—or otherwise—that often never get printed.
Polaroid, which has been hurt by the rise of digital photography (it was bought out of bankruptcy last year by Gordon Brothers Retail Group and Hilco Consumer Capital, which formed PLR) connected with Lady Gaga at last year’s show in the hopes of improving its image. She is the company's creative director.
