Don Cornelius' Soul Lives On
Don Cornelius may have moved on to the great dance club in the sky. But here among the living, the Soul Train brand grooves on, thanks to entrepreneurs like NBA Hall-of-Famer Earvin “Magic” Johnson.
The Associated Press reports that Johnson has assured Cornelius’ son, Tony, that his father’s legacy will live on. Johnson has formed Soul Train LLC and bought the Soul Train library, with plans for the brand that range from bringing the variety show back to television, to book deals, a cruise, and finally, maybe even a Broadway show.
Black Entertainment Network LLC, BET and Centric TV also own pieces of the brand, and the Soul Train annual awards are among the properties’ most popular content.
And while entrepreneurs seek to extend the brand’s popularity beyond the death of its founder, legions of fans have formed impromptu, flash mob-like dance lines in such places as New York’s Times Square. As the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported, a Soul Train fan tribute was planned on Mardi Gras in the Big Easy too.
Let’s hope all the plans and tributes put a posthumous smile on the face of a talented man who, sadly, took his own life last month.
