Wal-Mart Launches American Idol-Like Entrepreneurial Contest

Wal-Mart

Dreaming about getting your startup’s great gadget or gustatory delight on the shelves of the world’s largest retailer? Just please the public.

Wal-Mart announced Wednesday that its @Wal-Mart Labs was holding an “American Idol”-style contest to give shelf space to new products. Contestants create online videos of their inventions, and the public votes on which of those products make it to the Superstore.

The online voting will take place in two stages, whittling the contestants down to a grand prize winner, which will have its product featured on the Wal-Mart homepage and in some stores.

For entrepreneurs with a great product and the video salesmanship to win over voters, click at Wal-Mart’s Get on the Shelf site by February 22. Voting will happen on the same site from March 7 through April 4 and again from April 11-24.
