George Steinbrenner Dies
George Steinbrenner, who owned the New York Yankees from the 1970s into the 2000s, has died, his family said in a statement to ESPN.
"It is with profound sadness that the family of George M. Steinbrenner III announces his passing. He passed away this morning in Tampa, Florida, at age 80," the family told the network in a statement.
A “high-placed Yankee source,” told the New York Daily News the man known as “the Boss,” died at around 6:30 a.m. after suffering a heart attack.
During his years as Yankees owner, the larger-than-life Steinbrenner dominated the New York sports scene, and to some extent, the game of baseball, hiring and firing World Series-winning managers and driving up the cost of putting together a dominant franchise.
The Yankees won 11 American League pennants and seven world championships during Steinbrenner’s years as owner, a record unmatched by any other team.
