Quote of the Week: Misconstrued Misconstruction

Joe Barton

Representative Joe Barton, a Republican of Texas, took a lot of flak for demanding that Congress apologize to BP, which has been compelled by the White House to set aside a $20 billion oil spill clean up contingency fund. House Republicans demanded that Barton apologize for the apology, or lose his senior position on the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Barton's apology for the apology was remarkable: clumsy, yet notable for a certain unintentionally poetic quality. You couldn't make this up, and that is why it is Quote of the Week.

Take it away, Representative Barton:

"If I might take a small point of personal privilege I want to be absolutely clear that I think BP is responsible for this accident, should be held responsible and should in every way do everything possible to make good on the consequences that have resulted from this accident. And if anything I said this morning has been misconstrued to the opposite effect I want to apologize for that misconstrued misconstruction."
