Hawaii by Hybrid
A startup in Kauai, Hawaii, is planning to rent hybrid cars to tourists from the lobbies of hotels for $15 an hour.
GreenCar Hawaii, which considers itself a hybrid between a car rental and car-sharing service, is planning a pilot launch at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa with four to six Ford Escape Hybrids, reports Pacific Business News.
A kiosk in the hotel lobby will enable guests to make reservations at an hourly rate of $15, which will include fuel and insurance costs, co-founder Justin MacNaughton said.
Guests would then take a voucher to the hotel’s valet to get their car.
“It’s a self-service model that we hope to replicate throughout the hospitality industry,” MacNaughton said.
The business partners raised approximately $350,000 in angel financing, mostly from investors in the Bay Area.
The money will be used to launch the Kauai pilot and try to prove GreenCar’s concept by measuring demand for its service.
More info on the startup is available from Pacific Business News (subscription required).
