Ex-Florida GOP Chief Under Investigation
Jim Greer, who until January was Florida Governor Charlie Christ's handpicked choice to lead the state's Republican party, is now under investigation for allegedly steering nearly $200,000 of party money to a company he owned, according to media reports.
Greer was forced out of the job because of questions about his spending and his support of Christ over Marco Rubio for the GOP nomination for the race for a U.S. Senate seat this year. The new allegations go deeper, suggesting Greer mixed the personal and the political.
On Wednesday, the Republican Party of Florida released an audit that said Greer owned 60 percent of a political consulting business based in Tallahassee that got paid at least $199,000 in state party funds last year. The audit prompted Florida's attorney general, Bill McCollum, to send the matter to the Florida Department for Law Enforcement.
The New York Times quotes Greer's attorney, Gregory Miller, as saying the allegations are nothing but a "political vendetta."
