Ford Drives Into Top Auto Spot

Are U.S. automakers taking advantage of Toyota's disastrous problems with brakes and unintended acceleration? Yes, they are.

More than four in 10 Americans say they definitely would not buy a car from Toyota, according to a new Bloomberg poll. Toyota, which recalled 8 million vehicles, was viewed unfavorably by 36 percent of the participants in the poll. It has the highest unfavorable rating. Only 49 percent had a positive view of the company, which until recently had a reputation for good quality and reliability.

Ford had the highest favorable rating at 77 percent, and Honda came in second with a 70 percent favorable rating. GM, which survived thanks to a federal bailout, had a 57 percent favorable rating. But even GM CEO Ed Whitacre is confident that the company can use Toyota's troubles as an opportunity to convince car buyers that American vehicles are a good investment.
