Call It a Comeback
Ford Motor Co.'s Lincoln division shared the top spot with Porsche on the annual J.D. Power rankings of vehicle dependability, signaling more good news for American automakers as Toyota and Honda continue to make headlines for recalls and other problems.
The study shows that both Ford and General Motors made gains in benchmark studies from both J.D. Power and Consumer Reports. The automakers' next step is to get that information to the customers, who might have spurned the automakers in the past to go with the Japanese rivals, to show the reliability of the American-made vehicles.
"Producing vehicles with world-class quality is just part of the battle for automakers. Convincing consumers to believe in their quality is equally as important," David Sargent, J.D. Power's vice president of auto research, said in a statement.
Couple this news with reports that GM CFO Christopher Lidell said that the company chided for being "government motors" has a "reasonable chance" of earning a profit in 2010, echoing the sentiments of CEO Ed Whitacre.
