Who's No. 1?
Bill Gates is no longer the world's richest man. The Microsoft co-founder was knocked out of the top slot in Forbes' annual ranking of the top billionaires.
So who is the richest? That honor now goes to Carlos Slim, the 70-year-old Mexican telecommunications mogul who showed an impressive net worth of $53.5 billion. That was just above Gates' net worth of $53 billion.
So, what can Gates do to reclaim the lead? Perhaps Gates' plan to build a better beer keg or stop hurricanes will catapult the tech exec into the lead again next year.
It's not the first time Gates hasn't been atop the Forbes list. Warren Buffett was No. 1 in 2008, but then Gates retook the top spot last year. A financial news site in Mexico reported in 2007 that Slim had become the world's richest man, based in its calculations, but this is the first time he has been No. 1 in the widely cited Forbes list.
