The Return of Portfolio.com

I’m not a fan of zombie movies. Something about slow-moving, flesh-eating, melanin-deprived creatures scares the hell out of me.

Yet, here I am, guiding Portfolio.com as it takes its first steps toward life after more than three months of dormancy. Does that make us a zombie site? I like to think of us as just undead.

Today marks the soft launch—or rather, soft relaunch—of Portfolio.com. The site has shifted owners—from Condé Nast Publications to American City Business Journals, both divisions of Advance Publications—and has lost its companion magazine, but our mission remains largely the same. Portfolio.com is dedicated to making sense of a complex and changing business world, with smart stories that will surprise, delight, and sometimes even disturb you.

We’ll profile the executives and companies that rule the NYSE and Nasdaq, as well as the entrepreneurs who are creating the next big thing. We’ll also present the best business coverage from other Condé Nast publications. And we’re now backed by an army of 650 business journalists at ACBJ’s weekly business newspapers in 40 cities around the country, as well as at Sports Business Journal and Sporting News.

Make no mistake. Even though both the look and feel are the same, this will be a different site from the one that came before. The new Portfolio.com will dig deeper into selected industries—health care, technology, banking and finance, advertising and marketing, media, aviation, and more—and will present a wider range of stories from across the nation.

Today, we launch two new blogs: Pressed by Matt Haber, about the sea change in the media industry; and Heavy Doses by Brett Chase, which chronicles the business of health care. Also today, we present Numberology, a fun interactive look at a number in the news.

Over the next six weeks, we’ll be introducing new technical tricks and editorial features that will give you a better perspective on the day’s business news. By fall, our zombie stage will be over and we’ll be at full speed. So stay tuned.

Click around and let us know what you think by dropping a note to feedback@portfolio.com. You can help us create a site that helps you help your business.

Thanks for visiting us either again or for the first time.
