Whitney Shaw Tapped as ACBJ Chief

American City Business Journals, the Charlotte-based company that is taking over Portfolio.com, has a new boss—Whitney Shaw, one of the sons of Ray Shaw, the ACBJ CEO who died unexpectedly July 19.

The full release from S.I. Newhouse Jr., chairman of Advance Publication:

Whitney Shaw has been named President and CEO of American City Business Journals (ACBJ), it was announced today by S. I. Newhouse, Jr., Chairman of Advance Publications (the parent company of ACBJ). Mr. Shaw's appointment is effective immediately.

Mr. Shaw was previously Senior Vice President of ACBJ and president of its sports publishing division. He succeeds his father, Ray Shaw, who died on July 19th. In addition, Kirk Shaw has been appointed Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (he had been the CFO).

"It's fitting that Ray's sons take over at American City," Mr. Newhouse said. "They worked by his side for 20 years and this is what he would have wanted and recommended. The same principles that Ray used in building ACBJ will continue and thrive under his sons and their colleagues."

American City, based in Charlotte, is the largest publisher of metropolitan business weeklies in the United States, with 40 business journals across the country. Its City Business Journal Network sells national advertising for its own business journals and others outside of the company.

Additionally, American City's sports publications include Sporting News, NASCAR Scene, NASCAR Illustrated, Sports Business Journal, Sports Business Daily, and Inside Lacrosse. ACBJ also publishes Hemmings Motor News and is a leading provider of online content through numerous sites including bizjournals.com, sportingnews.com, scenedaily.com, rowdy.com, and insidelacrosse.com. The company will re-launch the business site portfolio.com this fall.
