44, Day 87: Out of the Station

An ongoing log of the daily activities of the 44th president of the United States during his first 100 days:

-President Obama today advocated on behalf of high-speed rail in at least 10 regions in the country. "What we need, then, is a smart transportation system equal to the needs of the 21st century," he said, "a system that reduces travel times and increases mobility, a system that reduces congestion and boosts productivity, a system that reduces destructive emissions and creates jobs."

-The Obama administration won't prosecute CIA officials who used controversial interrogation tactics like waterboarding during the President Bush's War on Terror as long as the agents acted in line with guidance from the Bush administration. The president today released a statement explaining his position on a matter liberals had hoped he would have taken a harder stance.

-In advance of his trip to Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago, the president had an op-ed published in 15 Carribean, Latin American and United States newspapers. Obama promised a "new day" in US relations with its neighbors.
