44, Day 80: And the Money Keeps Rolling Out
An ongoing log of the daily activities of the 44th president of the United States during his first 100 days:
-As a senator, Barack Obama didn't want American troops to fight a war in Iraq. As president, he wants Congress to approve $83.4 billion to fund military operations in Iraq (as well as in Afghanistan and Pakistan). About 90 percent of the funds would go to the Defense Department, while most of the rest would go to the State Department. Obama has vowed to bring most US troops home from Iraq next year, though he has renewed the US commitment to Afghanistan.
-President Obama highlighted the mortgage and foreclosure problem with a roundtable discussion at the White House today. "The main message we want to send today is, is that the programs that have been put in place can help responsible folks who have been making their payments, who are not looking for a handout, but this allows them to make some changes that will leave money in their pockets and leave them more secure in their homes," Obama said.
-To wrap up the president's big foreign trip, the White House put out a greatest hits of his remarks while away. But the real draw is a new photo slideshow.
