44, Day 75: NATO Promises
An ongoing log of the daily activities of the 44th president of the United States during his first 100 days:
During the two-day, 60th anniversary NATO conference in France, President Obama commended the allies for their support on his Afghanistan strategy, but much of the promised troop support will only be only temporary. The allies promised to send 5,000 troops to Afghanistan but 3,000 of them will only be stationed temporarily to help protect elections next summer. They also pledged to contribute $100 million for the Afghan army and add more civilian support for the country. Obama and the NATO leaders began the summit with a ceremonial walk into France over the German border. The leaders welcomed the two newest members to the alliance, Albania and Croatia. Meanwhile, outside of the summit, thousands of protesters clashed with police from both France and Germany.[Washintgon Post] [New York Times]
In his weekly video address, Obama reiterated the progress made at the G20 meeting in London earlier this week, emphasizing that the global recession needs a coordinated, global approach to be fixed. [White House]
