44, Day 66: Our Town
An ongoing log of the daily activities of the 44th president of the United States during his first 100 days:
-If the president holds a town hall meeting in the White House, is it still really a town hall meeting? To the Obama administration, it is, especially when the meeting takes questions via that great national town, the Internet. The news: Obama said the U.S. auto industry would get more federal help only if the auto companies make "pretty drastic changes" and he said his proposal for an aid package would be released soon.
-The president called Afghan president Hamid Karzai today to discuss continued US involvement in the country. According to a statement issued by the presidential palace in Kabul, the two leaders talked about an American strategic review of its Afghan policy. In Washington, California Senator Diane Feinstein said that the Obama administration wants to send an additional 4,000 US troops to Afghanistan to help train local forces.
-Officials at Notre Dame University have no intention of disinviting Obama as the school's commencement speaker next month. Some Catholic officials and alumni are upset by the president's pro-choice views, as well as his support for embryonic stem cell research.
