44, Day 62: Party Pooper

An ongoing log of the daily activities of the 44th president of the United States during his first 100 days:

-It's not exactly a prediction wothy of Nostradamus, but President Obama's chief economic adviser thinks the bottom is coming. ""I have every expectation, as do private forecasters, that we will bottom out this year," Christina Romer said on CNN's State of the Union. "And, [we'll] actually be growing again by the end of the year."

-Obama did something no first-year president has done since Grover Cleveland--he skipped Saturday's annual Gridiron Club dinner, which for 124 years has allowed Washington journalists and the politicians they cover to get together and have a laugh. Obama opted instead to go to Camp David with his family. Too bad. He missed Andrea Mitchell singing "Kiss the Dow goodbye," to the tune of a number from A Chorus Line.

-Among the other headlines from the interview Obama gave to CBS' 60 Minutes, which aired tonight--he said the dollar is still strong, but that might change if the nation keeps borrowing and racking up high deficits; he said big financial institutions could still be at risk, and he said development of an "exit strategy" might be part of a new U.S. plan to deal with Afghanistan;

-On Monday, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will detail the administration's plans to tackle "toxic" assets in the banking system. "Tomorrow, Treasury will release details of the next component: the Public Private Investment Program, which will invest alongside private investors in funds that will provide a market for the legacy loans and securities that currently burden the financial system," the department said in a statement.
