Madoff Now Shorthand for Greedhead
Can it be long before Bernard Madoff becomes a verb? As in: "I've been Madoffed!" or "Don't Madoff me, bro!"
U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton took a step in that direction today when he sentenced a former Bush White House official to 2 1/2 years in prison for stealing $579,000 from a government-funded program that promotes democracy in Cuba.
At his sentencing hearing, the official, Felipe Sixto, said he stole the cash because he "wanted to provide a lifestyle for my family I could not afford."
If Sixto thought that might elicit some sympathy from the judge, he was sorely mistaken. Walton said that Sixto reminded him of Madoff for coveting a lifestyle "far above" what he had earned. "The mentality that brings you before this court is the same," Walton said, according to the Associated Press.
Walton fined Sixto $10,000 and sent him to federal prison for 30 months, to be followed by three years supervised release.
