44, Day 33: Now, for My Next Trick
An ongoing log of the daily activities of the 44th president of the United States during his first 100 days:
-On Monday, President Obama will use a Fiscal Responsibility Summit to make a big promise--to cut the nation's projected deficit in half before his first tem ends, according to several reports today. That's quite a feat considering the deficit is expected to rise to $1.5 trillion after you take into account new spending for the just-approved stimulus package. Obama will help draw down the deficit by reducing the U.S. military commitment in Iraq and by letting tax breaks for wealthier Americans die.
-The president used his Saturday radio and internet address to talk about--what else?--the $787 billion stimulus package. Republicans countered in equally predictable ways, calling the plan and Democrats approach to fiscal policy "lousy."
