44, Day 31: Oh Canada!
An ongoing log of the daily activities of the 44th president of the United States during his first 100 days:
-For his first trip out of the United States as president, Barack Obama brought an anti-protectionism message to our neighbor to the north. Obama also used a joint appearance with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to say that his campaign vow to renogiate NAFTA would have to wait a while. "Now is a time where we've got to be very careful about any signals of protectionism," Obama said. "Because, as the economy of the world contracts, I think there's going to be a strong impulse on the part of constituencies in all countries to see if we -- they can engage in beggar-thy-neighbor policies."
-The Detroit News got a different lead from the Canada visit, highlighting Obama's take on the auto industry. "We are deeply concerned about the current state of the North American auto industry," Obama said. "There is going to have to be a significant restructuring of the auto industry."
-There's a new slideshow on the White House website, this one about the Canada trip. This administration does multi-media very, very well.
