Heartwarming Holiday News

The Christmas season is a time for shopping, feasting, visiting, caroling -- and, increasingly, crime.

A new survey from the Retail Industry Leaders Association shows that the current recession has started to cause an increase in the number of crimes reported by retailers.

Findings include an 84 percent increase in theft and amateur shoplifting, a 76 percent increase in financial fraud, an 80 percent increase in retail crime, and a 77 percent increase in organized retail crime.

The survey also indicates that the crime increase isn't only for urban areas, but has pushed out into rural areas as well.

As unemployment continues to rise these crime statistics will surely get worse. Especially of concern is organized retail crime, which involves crime rings whose proceeds go towards funding more criminal activity.

On the bright side, maybe this crime wave will provide an employment option for some of the newly laid off -- a new career in law enforcement.
