Who's the Grinch in This Story?
Dr. Seuss Enterprises doesn't seem to want to share the set of Whoville with Louisville this Christmas. The Kentucky city received a cease and desist letter from the company that owns the copyrights to the Whoville name and image.
Louisville had planned to use the iconic village and characters in its Christmas display. They had decided to name the display "LouWhoVille" and had costumed characters from the story to go with it until they received the letter from DLA Piper law firm in San Diego.
The letter demanded that the city of Louisville immediately stop using Dr. Seuss characters in the display and to not use the characters in the future without permission or the law firm would take legal action against the city.
The city decided not to get rid of the display but changed the name to "Lou-Ville" in order to comply with the request.
"It appears these lawyers' hearts are two sizes too small," Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson told the Associated Press.
Of course the lawyers at DLA Piper have every right to ask Louisville to stop using their copyrights without permission but don't they have better things to do? It look as if the lawyers for Dr. Seuss Enterprises are in danger of being named the grinches this Christmas.
