Insert Your Own "Friendly Skies" Joke Here
Just when you thought flying commercial airlines couldn't get worse...
United Airlines, the nation's second-largest largest carrier, sued its pilots union today, saying it took the action to protect it's passengers and, er, employees. Presumably that means its non-pilot employees.
The airline was vague about why it thinks the union has organized a sickout or how it has affected flights beyond the usual summer delays and cancellations. In its statement, United said "the rate of first officer sick leave" in "certain fleets" is up 103 percent this summer.
No word yet from the pilots' union, which yesterday filed a suit of its own against DHL in a separate dispute.
