The Donald Gets a Scottish Cheer
Call it a hair-raising return to his roots, or a Scottish version of Gone with the Wind.
Donald Trump visited his mother's childhood home yesterday on the Scottish Isle of Lewis, a pilgrimage that lasted as little as 97 seconds or as much as two minutes, according to the Guardian and the Glasgow Herald, respectively.
Local residents say Trump's fleeting visit is a cynical stunt to bring attention to his plans for a $2.5 billion luxury complex in Aberdeenshire, replete with two golf courses, a five-star hotel and hundreds of houses.
Armed with signs that read "We Don't Want You Hair" and "Don't Comb Over Here," they questioned why it took so long for Trump to finally visit his mum's childhood home.
Trump said he had simply been too busy until now.
Today in Aberdeen, at a public inquiry into his contentious development plan, Trump trumpeted his Scottish roots and vowed to build the best golf course in the world.
"Everybody thinks this is the best piece of golf land they have ever seen," said Trump, according to the Telegraph. "When completed this land will be environmentally enhanced and better than it was before."
The public inquiry on the proposed Trump International Golf Links Scotland, which is expected to last several weeks, was ordered after the Aberdeenshire Council rejected Trump's plan, arguing that the resort would harm the area's sand dunes, home to several bird species.
When asked how the inquiry was going, Trump, according to the Telegraph, said, "I think I'm slaying them."
