HD DVD Is Dead. What to Do With the Remains?
Paramount Pictures, one of the most vigorous supporters of the HD DVD media format, is formally calling it quits today. Along with Dreamworks, which Paramount owns, the studio will only sell movies on rival Sony's incompatible Blu-ray format.
Any HD DVD title that had been scheduled for release after today has been canceled.
The move comes after Universal Studios said last week it was abandoning HD DVD in favor of Blu-ray.
Paramount is expected to begin issuing Blu-ray releases almost immediately.
The final death knell for HD-DVD came when Toshiba said it was dropping work on HD-DVD, the standard that it invented, in the wake of Warner Brothers' decision to drop the format in favor of Blu-ray.
Other Blu-ray backers are Sony Pictures, Disney, and News Corp.'s 20th Century Fox.
What to do with all that instantly obsolete HD-DVD gear? Portfolio.com has a few suggestions on its video HD-DVD R.I.P.
