Google Is Being "Not Evil" Again

Continuing its mission to show the world that its is not "evil," Google has offered to give every homeless person in San Francisco a free phone number and a voice-mail account for life.

The company made the announcement at a Project Homeless Connect event yesterday at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. It was reported earlier today on msnbc.com.

"Access to phone and voicemail services is one way that Google can help San Francisco's homeless stay connected with family, friends, social workers, health care providers, and potential employers," said Craig Walker, senior project manager of Google, whose unofficial motto is "Don't Be Evil."

Social workers and others have long advocated giving homeless people phone numbers because job applications often require contact information. Homeless people can listen to their voice mail from any telephone.

"How do you expect your life to turn around if you can't even get information or if someone can't even get in touch with you?" asked San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom.
