From Macworld: Movie Rentals
Steve Jobs is now outlining Apple's plans for movie rentals at the Macworld 2008 keynote speech at the Moscone Center West in San Francisco. Portfolio.com's Sam Gustin is on hand (all times local). The earlier post, on Leopard and iPhone can be found here:
9:35 iTunes update: "Last week we sold our four billionth song." Seven million movies sold.
9:36 "We think there is a better way to deliver movie content through" iTunes movie rentals.
9:37 "We don't think people want to rent their music." "Most people watch their movies just a few times, and renting is a great way to do it."
Apple iTune's movie rentals, which previously just had Disney on board, has now signed up: Touchstone, Miramax, MGM, Lion's Gate, New Line Cinema, Fox, Warner Brothers, Paramount,
universal and sony
We have every major studio supporting us with iTunes movie rentals."
"We're going to have all the great first run films"
9:39: More than 1,000 movies available 30 days after the DVD is released. Users can watch anywhere, Mac, personal computer, iPod or iPhone and watch instantly, in less than 30 seconds with modern broadband. A customer has 30 days to start the film and 24 hours to watch. Prices? For new release, $3.99, and a library title, $2.99.
9:42: "iTunes movie rentals launches today"

So, he introduces Apple TV "Take 2" -- no computer required. People can rent movies - high-definition movies with 5.1 surround sound -- directly onto on your T
9:44. This announcement is greeted with loud applause.
9:45: "We've been working with the guys at YouTube for a while now."
9:47 Jobs is demonstrating ing how iTunes movie rentals works with Apple TV.
9:50: Now showing Live Free or Die Hard in high definition. (More applause. Have they seen this movie?) Rentals will be be categorized up by genre.
9:54 Now Jobs is demonstrating free HD video podcasts

The key on the new Apple TV is no computer required: "the recipient is doing this all through their TV."
9:55: Oops. When Jobs tried demo, the photos didn't appear.
"I'm afraid flikr is not serving up the photos today."
