Trump Loses a Round of Golf in Scotland

Like a long downhill putt that lips the cup, Donald Trump was thisclose to building his own golf course in Scotland, the cradle of the game. But, sadly, it is not to be.

Trump's application to build a $2 billion golf resort was rejected today by a Scotland council, the Guardian reported.

Trump had intended to build the golf course on Menie Estate, in Aberdeen off the northeast coast, the Guardian said.

The proposal, which had been approved by the local planning committee, has been quite a sore point for environmentalists, who said the golf resort would destroy some of Britain's finest sand dunes, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Not hard to imagine how, since this is Trump we're talking about—only extravagance and luxury can befit what was to be, as the Donald so modestly put it, "the world's best golf course." And how. The resort actually would have included two courses, as well a 1,000 holiday homes, 500 private houses and an eight-story hotel. Until, that is, native butterflies and birds selfishly got in the way.

The vote was close, at 7-7 with Martin Ford, the committee chairman breaking the tie.

No word yet from Trump on this particular setback, but a spokeswoman said one is coming.

For now, not all is loss for visitors to the area looking for a stellar game of golf. According to Menie Estate's website, there are plenty of courses in the area—"many of which are frequently voted amongst the world's top 50."

You just can't play golf Donald's way.
