Legendary football quarterback Roger Staubach has benched himself.
The former Dallas Cowboys play caller, who won the Heisman Trophy while leading Navy to a 9-1 season in 1963, stepped down as C.E.O. of his commercial real-estate brokerage.
Staubach, 65, said he will remain executive chairman of the Staubach Co., which completed 6,750 deals worth $26 billion last year, but added that giving up day-to-day duties will allow him more time to devote to other interests.
He recently worked to elect businessman Tom Leppert mayor of Dallas, and chaired the committee that persuaded the National Football League to hold the 2011 Super Bowl in neighboring Arlington.
Staubach led Dallas to four Super Bowls in the 1970s, when the Cowboys were known as America's Team. They won twice, beating Miami in 1972 and Denver in 1978.
