A Not-so-Funny Thing Happened at the White House

J. Jennings Moss writes: Don't hold your breath for some great announcement from the White House. You won't get any.

The much-anticipated meeting between President Bush, his economic advisers, the congressional leadership, and the presidential contenders just ended. No lawmakers came out and talked to reporters because aides said their work wasn't done. More meetings are set to take place on Capitol Hill.

Even though a number of key lawmakers said earlier today they had reached a tentative agreement on the bailout plan, some in Congress--namely House Republicans--aren't on board.

This could end up being a long night.
