A Debate Over Debating

J. Jennings Moss writes: So, John McCain, does a tentative bailout agreement mean the debate is back on?

McCain called for Friday's debate with Barack Obama, the first of three mano-a-mano sessions, to be postponed because of what had been an impasse over the Bush administration's $700 billion financial bailout plan. McCain also said he was suspending his campaign to head back to Washington to help with the negotiations.

Obama's counter was to propose a bit of multitasking. Yes, we should work on the bailout plan, he said. But we should also meet at Ole Miss to have our chat about foreign affairs as originally scheduled.

"The American people deserve to hear directly from myself and Sen. McCain about how we intend to lead our country," Obama said. "The times are too serious to put our campaign on hold, or to ignore the full range of issues that the next president will face."
