Fred, We Hardly Knew Ye
Well, no surprise that Fred Thompson dropped out. I guess I have some sympathy with The Atlantic's Marc AMbinder that Fred wasn't lazy. But it sure looked that way much of the time. Certainly the long delay between when he hinted at running and actually ran seemed to hurt him.
If the idea of a big start and lousy finish sounds familiar, it was the trademark of Thompson's high-profile hearing on campaign finance in 1997 and 1998. See my piece on it here.
