Last Word on Ron Paul and Aryan Types
As usual, I got a lot of notes about Ron Paul. I pointed to an article that noted that he'd been getting support from white separatist types.
Let me be clear:
I do not think Ron Paul is remotely antisemetic. I don't think wanting to cut off foreign aid makes one antisemetic.
I do think this: Very often important movements in American life attract unsavory elements. Communists tried to coopt the Labor and Civil Rights movements. John Birchers tried to hook up with mainstreat conservatives. The test of any movement is how it deals with hateful people who try to join their ranks. Great men like William F. Buckley, the conservative writer, and Walter Reuther, the late head of the United Auto workers, said no to this support and rejected it firmly.
So the question is not whether Ron Paul is antisemetic. He's not. The question is whether he'd affirmatively reject the support of white supremicists and make it clear that he doesn't want their money or their support.
I have a lot of respect for Libertarianism and Ron Paul. I defended him against the Giuliani smear that he was somehow apologizing for terror.
I think the right thing to do is to put a lot of distance between the Paul campaign and the haters who are supporting it.
