Mukasey Falling?
Is Michael Mukasey going to make it? The president's nominee to be attorney general looked like the perfect pick a few weeks back--a respected retired federal judge, conservative enough for Bush but with a modest mien, intellectual rigor and a crisp denunciation of torture and the shenanigans of the Gonzales Justice Department. I confess to having been sold myself. ( A friend clerked for him and said he was a prince.) But the New Yorker's odd statements about the president not being constrained by the law have put his nomination in some jeopardy. All the Democratic candidates for president will vote against him. He might not get to 50 votes which would be a huge blow for Bush or, conversely, a galvinizing force for Republicans.....Stay tuned.
