Hillary's Big Weekend

My spouse works for Hillary Clinton, heads her ad team in fact. I say that up front, as I try to do whenever I blog something about the Clinton campaign and the Democrats running so you can take that into account to judge whether I'm being fair.

But here I'm just echoing the conventional wisdom: What a weekend. She hit all the major talk shows and seem to do well. New York Times Columnist David Brooks seemed particularly impressed describing her as "serious" and "moderate" and "presidential" in the round table on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." Cokie Roberts, who's usually quite tough on the Clintons, seemed pretty impressed too. I'm sure the Senator's refusing to say when she'd pull all troops out of Iraq and how many she'd leave won't endear her to the left, but I don't think it'll undo her either as she sits on top of a 22-point lead in the national polls. Today, she picks up the endorsement of Indiana Senator Evan Bayh who just took a step up in the veepstakes. (Virginia Senator Jim Webb is my pick for smartest Hillary veep pick--military, southern, veteran and as a one-time opponent of women in the military who better to speak to male doubts about Ms. Rodham. In any event, it can still all fall apart of course. Iowa is a dogfight and if she comes in third there, the rest could unfold. There can always be news that upsets the race. But still it's hard to see what breaks up the Hillary lead. And what built that lead were her performances in the debates and on TV like this weekend.
