Romney in Charge
I was at a dinner party not too long ago with a lot of financial bigwigs including one private equity who had worked with Mitt Romney extensively when Romney ran Bain capital. This fellow is a Democrat but he likes Romney personally and thinks he's smart and an okay governor of Massachusetts. This person thinks Romney will be the Republican nominee in part because he's the most driven of the major candidates in the race and because he doesn't expect Giuliani to stay on top or Fred Thompson to emerge as some great shakes. I think yesterday's Republican debate would continue that trend. Romney tends to do very well in these debates and he's generally one them. His line about Barack Obama going from Jane Fonda to Dr. Strangelove seemed pretty amusing and helped with the party's base. The Iowa Straw Poll coming up on August 11 is pretty goofy--Giuliani and McCain have passed--but a Romney victory in it will actually help.
