For a Global FDA...

Today's big story in The New York Times about the lead being contained in children's jewelry made in China is a reminder that nothing short of global health standards is ever going to make us safe. We can have the best Food and Drug Administration in the world--and we obviously don't--and if China's an unregulated mess we're likely to pay the price. We saw this in the recent pet food scare. Would it be crazy to add safety standards to the mantra of labor and environmental protections that have become a part of our trade bills? Harold Meyerson makes the cased for a Global FDA eloquently. If not that, then certain global standards by which national FDAs comply makes sense.
