Hypocrisy and the DC Madam
Now that Sen. David Vitter has acknowledged that this phone number appeared on the rolls of a D.C. madam comes the inevitable debate about what is hypocrisy. Is Vitter, a conservative Republican, a hypocrite? He's said he wants to stay married and says he's working hard to repair his marriage. But he's also denied using prostitutes in the past and now a New Orleans madam has come forward to say that Vitter was a regular customer. That just makes him deceptive, but not a hypocrite. I think the real sign of hypocrisy comes from David Corn, my D.C. pal, who notes that he thought Bill Clinton's moral depravity deserved impeachment. Mind you, he wasn't saying that Clinton should be impeached on charges of perjury or obstruction of justice but simply for the sexual dalliance. Okay, that's hypocrisy, assuming Vitter wants to stay in the Senate which, I'm sure, he does.
