The Coming Iraq Shift

George W. Bush is not going to pull our troops out of Iraq. They'll still be fighting there on January 20, 2009 when the president jets back to Texas on Air Force One. But some kind of draw down seems inevitable before then. The latest evidence is today's New York Times pieceshowing how the president plans to announce at least some kind of drawdown. You're beginning to see the collapse of support among Republicans in the Senate and this week Congress will take up a slew of resolutions about Iraq funding that will ratchet the pressure up further. Robert Byrd and Hillary Clinton have one coming this week that would take back Congress's war authorization of 2002 and Chris Dodd has one that calls for immediate withdrawal. The votes may be symbolic but they're part of mounting pressure that's anything but.
