Don't Count Out Republican Donors
Much has been made in the past few days about the fundraising gap between Democrats and Republicans. For years, we've been used to the Republicans outraising the Democrats and now we have the opposite effect with Barack Obama raising more than Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney combined. The differences are striking, but I think it would be a mistake for Democrats to count out Republican money. Once the GOP settles on a presidential candidate--and they will--is there any doubt that they'll be able to build a warchest to defeat Obama or Hillary Clinton or John Edwards? Even before then, it's possible to envision Fred Thompson coming in and clearing the field. (I doubt that'll happen, but it's possisble.) The point is that GOP donors didn't suddenly disappear. Like investors in the stock market do from time to time, they're keeping their money on the sidelines.
