Wolfowitz's Last Chance

Embattled World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz made his case for staying in his job today. He attacked the "smear campaign" against him and told a special bank panel that he "acted transparently, sought and received guidance from the bank's ethics committee and conducted myself in good faith in accordance with that guidance" when he secured a higher paying job for his girlfriend. Not the way to go, I think. Raw contrition helps at a moment like this not defensiveness. He got a nice boost from Former United Nations Ambassador Andrew Young in this morning's Washington Post who offered an interesting take on Wolfowitz: he's dangerous on military matters but his pigheadedness makes him perfect for the sclerotic World Bank. It's kind of amazing that this is about the best defense that Wolfowitz can muster. One other good thing going for Wolfie is his lawyer, Robert Bennett, whose high-profile clients have included Clark Clifford, Caspar Weinberger, President Clinton and Judith Miller. That's not bad.
