Imus Out
The Imus meltdown offered a fascinating view of corporate culture. The advertisers, sensitive to the vicissitudes of the marketplace, were the first to jump ship. No two-week suspension was good enough for Staples or Proctor & Gamble. Then NBC went first because it was their esteemed news division that was on the line. It was hard to imagine how Les Mooves was going to stand alone with Imus after that and, of course, today he pulled the plug. You also saw the internal revolt in these companies. Al Roker's call on Imus to quit was only the latest. (Do you think Julie Chen, CBS Morning show anchor and Les Moonves's wife, thought her husband should stick by Imus? Please.) The other day I said Jeff Immelt wouldn't want to put up with this. Now we see that Sumner Redstone also wanted him out when he told Newsweek that he expected Moonves would "do the right thing. " The free market worked.
